Akyab,Burma 1896- 1898
THIRD MISSION STATION: AKYAB IN BURMA 1896-1898
As the mission in Assam was flourishing; more missionaries were sent to work in Assam. The third community was extended to Akyab in Burma. The sisters for this mission started their journey on December 30, 1895. The new community came into existence on February 01, 1896.However, this didn’t exist for a longer period and the sisters had to move to Shillong by March 1898due the climatic condition and poor health.
Sr. Kunigilde Meyer
Sr. Kunigilde Meyer was appointed as the superior of the new community in Akyab only for a few months and the change took place on August 19, 1896. Later she was transferred to Shillong; but she could not acclimatize and was sick always. She was well known for her handwork, choir, nursing and had the talent to teach and care for the orphans. On May 30, 1906 she was given her new assignment. In December 1906, Sr Ursula was bitten by a rabid dog and Sr Kunigilde accompanied her to the medical centre at Kausali in the Himalayas and after her recovery returned in January 1907. She was transferred to Shillong for health reasons and later to her homeland Germany for convalescence. In January 14, 1909 she returned to Shillong. Sr. Kunigilde spent a month at Moheema nursing coolies and experiencing the situation. She was then called back as they decided to drop the idea to proceed. By then the third mission station was opened. She was transferred to Raliang and she taught the bigger children, did handwork, sewing and involved in choir and sacristy. In 1910 she went to Shillong and was well known and liked especially among the English community. This time she was to stay with them forever. She became ill and died in Shillong of abdominal cancer on August 11, 1914 at the age of 48.
Sr. Constantia Ebert
Sr. Constantia Ebert was a member of the new mission of Akyab in Burma which was opened on February 01, 1896. The climate wasn’t appropriate for their health so they were often sick. Finally in 1898 Sr Constantia along with other sisters was asked to withdraw from Burma. She arrived in Shillong in March 1898 and was assigned to Raliang- the fourth community. The following year on July 22, 1899 she was appointed as the superior of the community in Laitkynsew which was shifted from Shella due to the earthquake in 1897 and she remained until 1904 and left for Europe due to her poor health.
